i am such an asshole

oh man, you guys...i'm so sorry about the portfolio assignment....i thought it posted when i posted your narrative assignment....i totally appologize because i intended for you to have plenty of time to work while i was gone and you had studio days....

so here's the assignment
10 images on a topic of your choosing

the breakdown can be 5 from previous assignments (1 you don't have to rework, 4 should be reworked based on crit) and 5 new..OR OR OR you totally can do all new images or a combo that results in many more than 10.....

they need to at least have a theme in common (types of images) or they can be their own narrative....whatever works for what you are thinking of

THINK about presentation...have intent in the order and such...AND Think about scale and numbers of images 1st...

then if you have time to worry about gussying up your portfolio by mounting or whatever, do so...but the gussying isn't required...you are allowed to create a book or do some sort of creative presentation (including projecting them in some way) AS LONG as it makes sense and is part of the concept....

so
DUE AT CRIT
10 or more images with at least 5 new ones
contact sheest for any new shots
assesment sheet
a cd of your final

AND PLEASE let me know if there are time conflicts at finals! i need to know sooner rather than later

thanks thanks....and let me know what i can do to help you

also...any late homework, extra credit or potential redos not to be submitted with the portfolio are due on weds!

filters assignment due april 9

this assignment is about learning what filters in photoshop can do and also working with creating layers.
follow these steps to complete this assignment....it is due weds april 9th

i would recommend watching the tutorials filters explained and filters gallery on UACBT before completing this assignment

1. choose one color photo from any of your contact sheets for this class
2. open that image in photoshop and using image>image size, change the resolution to 72 and make it around 2 inches x 2 inches in height and then color correct it.
3. create a new document in photoshop that is 8.5x11 with a resolution of 72 (file>new)
4. make sure you are on the move tool (top of your tool bar) and click on your small picture and drag it into your new document in the top letf hand corner. note that this will have created a new layer in photoshop (if your layers pallate isn't up, open it through window>layers)
5. make sure that the layer you just created is active (it should be blue), then run a filter on that image
6. click on the text tool (the big t in the tool bar) and directly beneath the photo, type the name of the filter. again you will notice that photoshop has created a new layer.
7. repeat these steps until you have run all the filters in photoshop...essentially you are creating a set of contact sheets for the filters
8. make sure that after every 3 or 4 images you add that you flatten your image (layer>flatten image) so that you don't wind up with 60 or 70 layers
9. print them out and turn them in to me...i WILL NOT accept emailed versions of this assignment

WEDS class (4/2)

so i managed to hurt my back on monday evening...and have been down for the count since....so we are not meeting for class tonite.....so i have a couple of activities for you to work on....these will be due on monday

first in terms of the reading material....this will be a hand in quiz......tell me what the main idea of chapter five is (in at least a paragraph) and then pick one artist in the chapter and explain his/her work and how it relates to the issues discussed in chapter 5. (about a typed page should be good for this assignment)

the second is that i want you to go on line and watch the UACBT tutorials on masking....take notes each tutorial and be prepared to hand those in on monday as well....i'll give them back at the end of class...i'm just checking that you did the assignment.

to find the tutorials, go to http://workshops.oscr.arizona.edu/ and scroll down to common resources.....you'll need to log in using your net id and password....once you've logged in, do a search for photoshop cs3, and click on the photoshop link (not the quick start, those are a different group).....then scroll down to Masks and watch all four and take notes.....then be sure and LOG OUT when you finish

i'm looking forward to seeing all of you on monday!

Artist Presentation, READ CAREFULLY

Artist Presentations

Pick a photographer you are interested in. EXCEPT ANSEL ADAMS.
Look this person up. Find out about their methods of art making (traditional, non-traditional, digital), their prefered subjects, the conceptual basis for their work (what does the work mean? why is this person compelled to make art?) Do you think their work accomplishes what they set out to create? What do you find strong in their arguments and work? What do you feel could be done better if anything?

Write 3-5 TYPED pages (3 pages min.) explaining what you found. Focus on concept!! Use AT LEAST two images as examples and turn in copies of those images with your paper.

This report must be typed, double spaced, done in some form of academic writing style. You must have at least TWO sources cited at the end in a Work Cited page. Please use proper citation style for quotes and paraphrases in your work. All the usual paper things count. EDIT your work.

Be prepared to talk about this person’s work for 10 minutes. You can bring in a powerpoint presentation, jpg images that can be opened in preview, or you can bring in GOOD prints from your printer, or books or a combination of these. Make sure that you have between 10 and 15 images to present to the class.

Here’s a list of potential artists. You are NOT limited to these folks or to digital photographers. These are just some suggestions.

If we have work by the person you choose at the CCP, I STRONGLY suggest that you make an apointment and see the real deal.

EMAIL ME YOUR CHOICE....i don't want repeat presentations. it's first come, first serve on topics. i will post a claimed list as folks choose

sketchbook assignment 3

okay...this one depends on if you 've done assignment no. 2....if you haven't done that yet, get going!...if you have, then read on

think back to the lists you made.....if you need to do additional listmaking to complete this assignment, please do so......look at that lists assignment....pick out the three things that you thought about most, and write longer explaintions of each....why did they come up more often? is there any connection between the three things? how could you see those issues becoming a part of your photographs? making lists of things that you could photograph to represent your ideas is a great way to work on this...i love list making...i use it all the time....it's totally a graphic design based brainstorming technique that you can use to help plan your day of image making

again, i'm going to skim this rather than read every word, so please don't feel that you need to sensor yourself...it will help you more if you don't

SKETCHBOOK ASSIGNMENTS 2, and 3 will be checked on MARCH 24th! Don't forget!!

color correction and cloning assignment

so here's your assignment.....pull the photo at the bottom of this entry from the blog (click and drag) onto your desktop....open this jpg in photoshop and color correct it first....then using the healing tool and cloning tools to remove the lettering from the rock.....the goal is to make the photo as natural as possible....work to make the rock look like the words were never there!.....this should be fun not frustrating.....do if you get stuck don't freak out....just do the best job you can!

email your finished image to me no later than MARCH 24!

readings update

so i was looking at the calendar, and i think it makes more sense to shift chapter 2 to the 25th...i'll bring photocopies of that chapter to class on weds so no worries there

also, bring contact sheets and/or something that you are working on to class....i am doing a couple demos the first half and want to have time to visit with all of you the 2nd half

see you then!

Monday, February 11, 2008

sketchbook assignment 2

so here' s what i want you to do....in this class we will be talking a lot about what you want to make work about...concept building activities are important....and finding out the sorts of things that interest you and what you think about daily can be the key to discovering an approach to making art.....a good friend once told me that what you spend the greatest portion of your time thinking about durning the day is probably what you should be making work about

so this is what i want you to do....carry your sketch book with you...and i want you to track what you think about over the next 3 days ..i of course do not mean that i want you to write down every thought....but look for themes...things that occur to you over and over....worries, fears, things that make you happy, things you do, and, therefore, spend lots of time thinking about, interactions with other people...anything is game!

you need to be diligent in your efforts for this to be useful...so write as often as you can...do it any way you like...i like doing this exercise by making short lists and goofy sketches....but you may have your own shorthand for it....

the other key to this is not sensoring yourself...i will check your sketchbooks, but i'm not going to read what you write because i don't want you spending extra time worrying about what i will see...this is for you not me....

Reading discussion on WEDS!!

Just to remind everyone, Cotton, Chpt 1, is due for discussion on Weds. there will be a tiny quiz at the beginning of class

camera assignment DUE WEDS JAN 23

This week you will spend some time getting to know your digital camera. Please complete the following activities.

In your sketchbook, write down the location of the camera settings that you spent time with and answer the questions that follow. I will check your notes to make sure that you completed the assignment.

1. READ YOUR CAMERA MANUAL. If you need a manual for your camera, look up your make and model on line and you should be able to download a pdf copy. Please feel free to email me with questions if you have problems finding one.

2. Find Format in your menu

3. Find the area in your menu to set the image quality and type (tiff, jpg, raw)

4. Find your ISO/film speed. How many settings do you have?

5. Find your white balance control. How many setting does your camera have, and what do they do?

6. Find your manual functions and spend some time changing your shutter speed and your aperture. How do you change these? Make sure you know where your light meter is located.

7. What sort of recording media does your camera need (cf card, memory stick, etc) How much memory does it have?

8. Take at least 24 photos. Use your auto function for 5 of them. and then practice using the maual functions, and changing the white balance on your camera to take the rest. Take some with and with out your flash.

Don't fret if you aren't sure how to make these work yet, we will be covering exposure!

BRING YOUR CAMERA TO CLASS NEXT WEDS WITH YOUR PHOTOS ON YOUR CAMERA!

Beginning Digital Photography, Art 244
Spring 2008, Mon & Weds, 6-7:50pm
Instructor: Rae Strozzo
rstrozzo@email.arizona.edu

blog: www.digi244.blogspot.com

Course Description
This course will serve as an introduction to the digital camera and techniques in the digital darkroom and their application to the production of a body of contemporary photographic inquiry.

The purpose of this class is to develop competency in the digital darkroom through lessons and projects that teach photography and Photoshop skills. These skills will then be applied to developing an expressive visual language. It is the goal of this class to make each student competent in the conceptual, aesthetic and technical aspects of digital photography. Each student will be encouraged to use digital photography to develop a personal vision as evidenced in his or her final portfolio.

During the semester, there will be demonstrations on photoshop techniqus and exercises to be completed based on these demos. These exercises will be counted towards the students' quiz grades. Students will be given reading assignments over the semester, and quizzes will be given covering that material. Each student is required to keep a sketchbook for this class and complete the assignments given for the sketchbook. Each sketchbook check will also count as a quiz grade.
Each student is expected to bring work and participate in critiques for each photo assignment and for the presentation of the final portfolio. Each student will also be expected to develop and turn in a written artist statement with the final portfolio. Work done by students will be critiqued and assessed according to its creative value as well as technical strength. In other words, aesthetic concerns, content and individual creativity and growth in using digital photography will be as important as knowledge of its mechanics.

Contacting the Instructor
I will accept emails at the provided address anytime. I try to check my email daily but please realize that I may not get back to you over weekends. I do not have an office phone. Email is the best way to contact me. I also have box on the first floor of the Art department. Please feel free to leave messages for me there as well, but be aware that I will only check that box a couple times during the week. DO NOT leave work for me in that box unless we have discussed it previously.

Required Text and Supplies
Texts: The Photograph as Contemporary Art by Charlotte Cotton
Adobe Photoshop CS3 One-on-One by Deke McClelland
Equipment: Each student will be required to provide their own digital camera. The camera should have at least 4 megapixels and have manual functions. Please feel free to contact the instructor regarding camera needs. If necessary, students may also be allowed to shoot their photos in film and scan them, but this must be discussed with the instructor.

Recommended Texts
Photoshop CS3 Classroom in a Book
How to Wow in Photoshop, CS3
Teach Yourself Visually Adobe Photoshop CS3 (woolbridge)

Recommended Equipment Purchases
Photoshop CS3 for pc or mac
photo quality printer (these start at around $100)
extra memory card for your camera
card reader
cds
cd holder
external hard drive or jump drive
gray card
lens pen

Assignments
All sketchbook assignments, class notes from demos, reading assignments, project assignments as well as the class calendar and crit groups will be posted to the blog. Students should check the blog at least once a week for additional information and links.
Demos will be given on photoshop tools and techniques. Quizzes will be given over demos and reading materials . Each student will be assigned an artist presentation to give to the class. Presentations will count for 3 quiz grades. Each student will be required to complete and will be graded on 4 assignments and a final portfolio. (Handouts will be given to explain each assignment in detail.) A cd of the student’s work from the entire semester will also be included with the portfolio. All work will be displayed for classroom critique.

Late Work
I would prefer that work not be late or turned in on a different day other than your specified critique group day. If you miss your critique, you have until the next class meeting time to turn in the work for a reduced grade. If it is not turned in by the next class meeting, the project will be given a zero. DO NOT turn in work to the art office or in my box, without notifiying me. The art office will not tell me, and I do not check my box on a regular basis. Turning your work in to either of these places without notifying me is the same as not turning it in, and the same time rules will apply.

Attendance
Attendance is necessary for individual development and for valuable community contributions that each class member is expected to give. The student’s individual participation in discussions and critiques is necessary, expected and required.

According to U of A policy, the only excused absence is a religious holiday or is accompanied by a Dean’s excuse.

I will allow three unexcused absences over the course of the semester. 4-5 absences equals a drop of one letter grade, 6-7 equals 2 letter grades 8 or more will result in a automatic “E.”

Be on time to class. Excessive or regular tardiness, more than 10 minutes, more than twice will be regarded as an absence.
If emergency, illness, or required travel occurs during class time, please notify me through email.

Grades
Quizzes 20 %
Projects 60%
Final Portfolio 20%

Work completed by anyone other than you may NOT be used as a fulfillment of any project in this course. All work must be current. It is against School of Art policy to submit the same work to two different classes for credit in both. Please also refer to the University Code of Academic Integrity and Code of Conduct.
